The race that ended with Joseph Heidemann unseating Alderperson Andre Walton by the draw of cards last Wednesday will undergo a recount today.
Heidemann initially won the election by one vote 403-402 on Tuesday night. However, an absentee ballot that was previously rejected, was accepted on Wednesday, revealing a valid vote for Walton, tying the race at 403 apiece. The Board of Canvassers then exercised their right to decide how to break the tie, which they did with a draw of cards, and which Heidemann won.
A petition from Walton for the recount was received on Monday, claiming that a mistake may have been committed in wards 19 and 20 of District 10 in the counting and return of votes cast for alderperson, including the characterization of certain rejected ballots.
The 9 a.m. recount takes place in conference room 106 of City Hall.
