WASHINGTON, DC (WSAU) — The US Supreme Court has thrown out two of the state’s redrawn political maps, citing the Federal Voting Rights act.
The state’s Assembly and Senate maps were tossed with the Justices saying they moved too many voters in a way that created more districts with majority Black and Hispanic voters.
Justices then sent the maps back to the State Supreme Court, which had selected them earlier this year, saying they are “free to take additional evidence if it prefers to reconsider the Governor’s maps rather than choose from among the other submissions.”
Maps need to be in place in time for the August 9th primary election.
The Justices did leave the new Congressional maps in place.
Both Republicans and Democrats have been at odds over which maps to adopt following the 2020 Census and had asked the Wisconsin Supreme Court to intervene.
