While it hasn’t been a good season for snowmobiling in our part of the state, the Wisconsin DNR says that where there has been snow, it’s been a deadly year so far.
After 13 fatalities all of last year, the DNR says there’ve already been 10 deadly accidents this year, three of those this past weekend, and one investigation is still pending.
This past weekend’s casualties occurred in Oconto, Polk and Bayfield Counties. Two of those were the result of collisions with a fixed object, ejecting the driver. The third was a rollover accident.
DNR Lieutenant Martin Stone, who is the Off-Highway Vehicle Administrator, says the overall leading causes of snowmobile fatalities are alcohol, excess speed, driver inexperience and operator error. He urges snowmobilers to take their time and slow down, especially at night.
