The Sheboygan County Joint Dispatch Center was flooded with calls on Monday afternoon from residents reporting a gas leak. But it wasn’t natural gas they were smelling.
According to Sheriff’s Lieutenant Larry Peronne the calls began arriving first from the Kettle Moraine area and progressed eastward until calls of the oder began arriving from the City of Sheboygan. Wisconsin Public Service Corporation was dispatched to investigate the source, and what they found was a spill of “mercaptan” in Fond du Lac County. Mercaptan, a harmless chemical, is added to natural gas because it has a powerful odor, while natural gas actually has none. Officials say there was never any danger, because there was no actual gas leak.
