UNDATED (WHBL) – Nobody wants to go without heat this time of year, and Alliant Energy says that scammers are playing off these cold times in a ploy to get your money. The energy company says they’re receiving reports from customers in Wisconsin and Iowa of calls from scammers claiming to be from Alliant Energy – sometimes even using caller ID technology that makes their number appear as coming from Alliant.
The callers will threaten to cut off power in a few hours unless immediate payment is made. Alliant Energy says that they do not call customers demanding payments. They won’t ask for prepaid credit cards or for payment over emails and, if you receive such a call, Alliant says to hang up immediately.
It should also be noted that by law in Wisconsin, electricity and natural gas cannot be turned off between Nov 1st and April 15th. If you do want to call Alliant, the only legitimate number to call is 1-800-ALLIANT.
