Last week 3 schools in Sheboygan fell under masking mandates by Wednesday, crossing a 5% threshold of student illness that required the measure, and it appeared two more would join those ranks by Thursday. But suddenly it appeared all schools were O-K. It wasn’t for some quick cure but because of adjustments at the CDC. The Sheboygan Area School District had adopted new guidelines that cut recommended isolation periods for COVID-19 from 10, down to 5 days if symptoms have disappeared. The change makes it possible for more students – and staff – to remain in school, and for employers to have workers on-site.
Changes also came to the reporting of the pandemic at the County Division of Public Health. As of Monday, the Coronavirus Case Dashboard displays the usual confirmed, and now probable active, total, recoveries and deaths from COVID-19. Probable classification is assigned when clinical criteria and evidence points to COVID-19, but a confirming lab test isn’t there. Using the new data, another 503 active cases pushes our likely active case load to 4,854, and total deaths to 212.
Another addition to the County DPH “Data Spotlight” section now includes Statewide information on breakthrough infections, or a positive test to someone who is more than 2 weeks past their last vaccine dose. Per 100,000 population in December, that data shows:
1,573.2 vaccinated persons got COVID, compared with 4,746.4 unvaccinated persons.
18.5 vaccinated persons were hospitalized, compared with 176.4 unvaccinated.
3.6 vaccinated persons died vs 50.8 unvaccinated in Wisconsin.
