The second full year under the coronavirus pandemic in Sheboygan draws to a close with little change from the end of the past year beyond the steadily increasing numbers. The Sheboygan County Division of Public Health has posted its last data for the year, and new information will again begin flowing on Tuesday, January 4.
As of Thursday, December 30, 21,087 cases have been recorded here during the pandemic. The final report of 2020 showed 11,270 cases, about 53% of the current total for the two-year period. Given that the SARS-CoV-2 virus arrived in Sheboygan County in mid-March of last year with no knowledge of its nature or ability to spread – and without a vaccine for immunization, it could be argued that the virus has succeeded despite efforts to contain it.
On December 30 of 2020, there were 999 active cases. One year later, December 30, 2021, there are 1,001, an increase of 35 since Wednesday. That’s after 120 new positive test results arrived amid 85 recoveries. 323 test in all had been conducted in the past day, yielding a 37% positive rate. One year ago the positive test rate was 44.7%
35 persons are currently hospitalized for treatment of COVID-19 symptoms, three fewer than on Wednesday. One year ago, 20 were hospitalized. 1,043 persons in all have required hospitalization to date; one year ago that number was 397. As 2021 comes to a close, 182 have not survived the coronavirus. One year ago, that toll was 93, almost exactly half the current total.
Sheboygan County’s Case Activity is considered “Very High”, down from being categorized as “Critically High” previously. The “Burden”, or total number of cases per 100,000 the last two weeks was 801.6, and the trajectory has seen a downward trend of 56%. Meanwhile, the Level of Community Transmission is “High” with 368.48 new cases per 100,000 in the last 7 days, and a 7-day average percent of positive tests of 15.02%. Both figures were unrevised since Wednesday.
As last year closed, only 995 persons had received a single dose of vaccine in Sheboygan County. That figure now stands at 69,850, or 60.6% of the population, up 109 from Wednesday. The number of fully vaccinated individuals, 66,014, is up 51 from Wednesday, and accounts for 57.3% of the county population.
