MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — Harvest numbers are down this year after the first weekend of the Gun Deer season.
“Our harvest is just a hair down from last year,” said Eric Loebner with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. “Ultimately our antlered and our antlerless registration is down about 14 percent overall.”
Tag numbers, too, are down, although not nearly as much.
“License sales data ended up right around a 1.7 percent decline over last year, which is still a great number,” Loebner said. “Last year we saw a bump in our overall license sales.”
Wisconsin hunters harvested 85,860 deer during opening weekend this year, that number includes 47,529 antlered and 38,331 antlerless deer.
In 2020, hunters bagged 99,832 deer on opening weekend.
