CLEVELAND, OH (WHBL) – Corbin Burnes recorded 14 strikeouts over eight innings to set up a perfect 9th by Josh Hader- who completed baseball’s 9th no-hitter this year and a 3-0 win by the Brewers on Saturday.
Burnes had a perfect game going until the 7th when Myles Straw drew a leadoff walk on four pitches. He advanced to second on a ground ball two batters later but was stranded when Franmil Reyes went down swinging to end the inning.
Burnes did not get a chance to finish the game himself, as he was pulled after the 8th inning for Hader. The Brewers’ closer opened the frame with a strikeout of Oscar Merchado before Austin Hedges flew out to the second baseman in foul territory. Straw then went down swinging for the final out, completing the no-hitter.
Milwaukee’s offense was provided by Christian Yelich, who brought home a run on a double in the first inning then scored on a sac fly by Omar Narvaez. Rowdy Tellez provided an insurance run in the second on a double to score Daniel Vogelbach.
Saturday’s game was just the second no-hitter in Brewers’ history. Juan Nieves tossed the first back in 1987 over Baltimore.
The Brewers will go for the series sweep in Sunday afternoon’s game, which can be heard on 106.5 The Buzz beginning with pregame coverage at 11:35. WHBL will be airing the Packers/Saints season opener.
