A Manitowoc Metro Drug Unit investigation has landed a 35-year-old Manitowoc man in jail on a federal detainer, awaiting arraignment on four felony drug-related charges.
According to Sheriff Dan Hartwig and Lieutenant Dave Remiker, Steven J. Khail sold various quantities of Fentanyl during controlled purchases in several Manitowoc locations this past February. Then in mid-March, Metro Drug Unit and Manitowoc Sheriff personnel conducted a traffic stop on Khail near Cleveland, where they seized some 66 grams of Fentanyl and a quantity of “Black Tar” Heroin.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of Wisconsin filed charges of knowingly and intentionally distributing Schedule-II controlled substances based upon the February purchases, and additional charges of knowingly and intentionally possessing with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of Fentanyl from the March traffic stop. If found guilty on just that last charge, Khail faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years, and up to 40 years in prison.
Editor’s Note: According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, a lethal dose of Fentanyl can be as little as 2 milligrams (.002g) depending upon body size. If the amount seized near Cleveland was pure, it had the potential to kill as many as 33,000 persons.
