
Jeannette Miriam Houwers, born June 21, 1926, to John Houwers and Harriet Constance (Van
De Bogart) Houwers, Sheboygan Falls, died September 6, 2021, at Sheboygan Senior
Community. Jeannette graduated from Sheboygan Falls High School and attended Sheboygan
County Teachers College in Sheboygan Falls where she received her teaching certificate. While
teaching in rural schools, she attended Wisconsin State College, Oshkosh for her bachelor’s
degree and took a job teaching 5 th grade at Longfellow school in Wausau. She continued her
education at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI where she earned her master’s
degree. Upon completion of her master’s degree, she was offered an Assistant Principal
position and later became Principal of Longfellow. In 1967 she was offered a job with Harper
and Row as a consultant in the educational publishing division, moved to New York, and held
that job for 10 years before becoming a Senior Editor. Later she worked as a Senior Editor for
Random House and then McGraw-Hill in their education groups until her retirement and return
to Sheboygan to be near family. Jeannette was a warm and friendly person who always had a
smile on her face and a giving heart, supporting her church and many other charitable
organizations. She was loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
Jeannette was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Willard Houwers and Andrew
Houwers, and sisters Harriet (Houwers) Klima and Eleanor (Houwers) Buelke. She is survived by
nephews James Houwers and Arthur Houwers and nieces Connie (Houwers) Machi, Karen
(Buelke) Parish, and Barb (Buelke) Dircks and their children.
A Private Graveside Service will be held at a time yet to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 623 Ontario
Ave., Sheboygan, WI 53081 in Jeannette’s name.
