Wisconsin residents reported more than $93,000 lost to scams during the summer – that according to the Better Business Bureau serving Wisconsin. The stats come from the BBB’s Scam Tracker website where victims self-report scam attempts – and losses, which occurred in more than half the cases.
Online purchases were the most common scam, comprising 40% of all reports in May through August, with over $29,000 lost. Almost half of that ($14,538) involved buying a pet online, with 19 scams averaging a $765 loss each.
Pfishing scams, many of which impersonated government agencies and deliveries, made up 12% of reports, and those can also compromise personal data, leading to future losses.
Additionally, Wisconsin residents lost more than $10,550 to cryptocurrency scams.
