Summer is over, at least as far as weather forecasters are concerned, and also for schools in Sheboygan County where all public school districts are now open. Among the preparations such as gathering supplies, filling backpacks and lunch boxes, face coverings are likely on the list of things to bring.
While the Sheboygan Area School District considered requiring masks at Tuesday’s special meeting, the idea failed on a 5-4 vote against, keeping face coverings optional in the school building. And a check for masking policies of all county school districts came up with a variety of language, but “optional” was a universal guideline. “Highly”, or “Strongly” encouraged was also common when it comes to face coverings. But if a student rides a bus to school anywhere the U.S., there’s no option – it’s required on the ride.
Not so common – “virtual learning”. Some districts, like Sheboygan, Sheboygan Falls and Plymouth made it available, but unlike the past school year, the term was absent from many other district’s websites.
The Wisconsin DOT had one other reminder for everyone now that school is open. Their September “Law of the Month” concerns the requirement that drivers in both directions are required to stop at least 20 feet from a school bus with its red warning lights flashing. The only exception is for vehicles on the other side of a divided road that’s separated by a median or other physical barrier. Last year, 648 drivers were convicted of violating that law, one that’s meant to ensure a safe school year for the thousands of students now going to and from classes.
