The number of active cases of COVID-19 in Sheboygan County has leaped to 136, the highest number recorded in the last three months. The gain of 19 active cases since Monday is the result of 25 new positive tests, offset by 6 recoveries, putting the total number of cases here during the pandemic at 14,083. An additional net gain of 1 hospitalization puts the current patient total at 4. Averaged over the past 7 days, new daily confirmed cases in Sheboygan County number 16.57, or 14.4 per 100,000 persons.
Vaccinations are being urged as the most effective way to control the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, especially with the predominance of the Delta variant, which has shown to be much more contagious than previous variants of the virus, and which also has the ability to infect even those that have already been vaccinated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the vast majority of new COVID cases are occurring in those who are not yet vaccinated. And although so-called “breakthrough” cases can still occur when vaccinated, those individuals nearly always experience fewer and less severe symptoms and avoid hospitalization and death. Nonetheless, the Delta variant has been shown to be able to jump from an asymptomatic vaccinated individual to a non-vaccinated person, and so the wearing of masks by even vaccinated persons is now recommended when indoors to prevent the spread.
In Sheboygan County, 50.6% of the population, or 58,382 persons, have received at least one shot of vaccine, and 48.3%, or 55,734, are fully vaccinated.
Free “Walk-in Wednesday” vaccination clinics are held each Wednesday from 9-4 at the Sheboygan County Health and Human Services headquarters at 1011 North 8th Street across from Fountain Park. For those wishing to receive vaccine but unable to attend there, call the COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline at 920-395-9890.
