The number of active cases of COVID-19 in Sheboygan County has tripled in less than two weeks as the highly-contagious Delta variant becomes the dominant strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Wisconsin.
On Friday, July 16, 23 cases were active in Sheboygan County; by this past Friday the 30th, that number reached 85, more than triple in two weeks and an increase of 15 in just one day. It’s also the highest number of active cases in the county since mid-May.
The trends in Sheboygan County are following those of the state as a whole. On June 21st, Wisconsin was seeing a 7-day average of 69 new cases confirmed each day. By this past Thursday, July 29th, that average was 638, nearly 10 times higher, and 1,058 new cases were added on Thursday alone.
Officials at the State Department of Health Services are blaming the Delta variant for the rise, as they say it is extremely infectious and is spreading more quickly than any other strain of COVID-19 during this pandemic. They add that from January 1st through July 22nd of this year, over 98% of COVID cases occurred among people who were not fully vaccinated, and they urge those who haven’t yet received vaccinations to consider acting as soon as possible.
In Sheboygan County, 50.3%, or 58,010 persons, have received at least one dose of vaccine, and 48.2%, or 55,537, are fully vaccinated. The County DPH says that you can be vaccinated at several community walk-in clinics throughout Sheboygan County or by appointment.
