National Weather Service forecasters are on heightened alert, expecting a significant outbreak of severe thunderstorms to plough its way across Wisconsin beginning this afternoon, exiting the southeast corner sometime early Thursday morning.
All the ingredients for a large-scale event are coming together, including plenty of heat, humidity, and wind shear, as an energetic cold front moves through it all. Although a few storms could pop up in the afternoon, the main threat affecting Sheboygan County is now expected to be from 10 PM until 2 AM.
Forecasters this morning were advising that all types of severe weather – heavy rains, large hail, high winds and possible tornadoes – could come from this, but the main concern is for those high winds. Experts are watching for the possible formation of a derecho, a large-scale windstorm that can produce damaging straight-line winds over areas hundreds of miles long and more than 100 miles across.
This is definitely a day to keep up with the forecast, especially this afternoon as storms get closer and the picture becomes clearer.
