As the COVID-19 pandemic continues receding in Sheboygan County, the Division of Pubic Health has announced that its daily updates will conclude on Friday, June 18th, and the first of what will be weekly reports will be issued on Thursday, June 24th. And although the daily report will be discontinued, the dashboard will still be updated each day and made available on the county’s COVID-19 website at sheboygancounty.com. The change was said to reflect the continued decrease in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and activity level. The County DPH says that they continue to be cautiously optimistic about the current situation and encourage community members to consider receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Help with scheduling appointments is available by calling 920-395-9890.
Three more positive test results were received by the County DPH since Wednesday, raising the running total to 13,876. Six recoveries yielded a drop in the active case count to 43.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services recorded 99 new positive test results, and 611,943 persons in the state have now had COVID-19. 7,235 did not survive, with five deaths attributed to the disease since Wednesday. Over the past 7 days, deaths due to the coronavirus have averaged 1 per day in Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin Hospital Association noted a net drop of 3 patients with COVID-19 since Wednesday, and 121 are now hospitalized for treatment. 45 of those are in ICU beds, and 416 ventilators are in use statewide.
The so-called “delta” variant of COVID-19, known also as B.1.617.2 which spread rapidly in India of late, is now being tracked in Wisconsin, and has accounted for 35 cases so far. In the Southeast region which includes Sheboygan County, this variant makes up only 0.1% of cases. This variant spreads more rapidly and easily than the original strain of SARS-CoV-2, and it’s suspected that therapeutics, such as monoclonal antibody treatments, may be less effective on the Delta variant due to unique mutations on the spike protein, and it’s possible that vaccines which are programmed to respond to the presence of these spike proteins may be less effective. Nonetheless, the COVID-19 vaccines available in the US have been shown to provide protection against the Delta variant, and vaccinations are being encouraged as a way to control its spread.
Wisconsin is still struggling to reach 50% of the population receiving at least one dose of vaccine. 49.3% have been treated so far, amounting to 2,873,061 persons. 44.8%, or 2,610,837, have been fully vaccinated. In Sheboygan County, 55,030 persons – 47.7%, have received at least one shot. That’s an increase of 155 since Wednesday, and 50,450, or 43.7%, are fully vaccinated, 310 more than on Wednesday.
