Wisconsin State Senator Devin Lemahieu
State Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu of Oostburg joined other Republican leaders on Tuesday to make the case that an estimated budget surplus of $4.4 billion should be used to reform the state’s tax code.
LeMahieu said, quote: “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fundamentally reform our tax code and provide transformational tax relief for Wisconsinites,” and that “Hard-working taxpayers gave the state a massive surplus. We will take this moment to consider ways to significantly reduce the tax burden on workers and main street businesses and pay off state debt to save taxpayers long into the future.”
In light of the surplus, Governor Evers on Tuesday reversed a directive issued during the pandemic to find over $300 million in savings across 18 state agencies over two fiscal year budgets, and would like to return much of the money to the UW and State Technical College systems, the Department of Children and Families and others. He also continues pursuit of over 1-1/2 billion in federal funds for schools, jeopardized by Republican failures to meet spending thresholds set by Washington concerning expenditures of state funds on schools.
