Labeling issues with imitation ag products have been a conversation in the industry for a while now. Once again, two bills have been introduced in order to end labeling confusion at grocery stores.
The two bills would stop companies from being allowed to label non-dairy products with dairy vocabulary such as “milk” or “cheese.” The law would make sure that only foods that are made with ingredients from the milk of a cow, sheep, goat, or another mammal could use such language.
There’s a third bill that would have the same initial goal, but for meat products. The good news is that the bills have support from many Wisconsin ag organizations.
The legislation is still in the beginning stages. Before anything else happens, it has to be looked at by the full Assembly and Senate. If the bills get approved, other states would also have to agree with what Wisconsin does in order for it be become a law in the state due to federal rules.
Related legislation was in Madison last year, but got stopped because of the pandemic.
