The need for all blood types never ends, but the American Red Cross is asking donors with type “O” blood especially to come forward and donate soon. Type “O” blood is special because of its compatibility with other blood types for transfusions, and the need for blood has been high during the pandemic.
All donations are tested for COVID-19 antibodies, and while this isn’t a diagnostic test, the results – usually available within a week or two – can tell you and the Red Cross whether valuable antibodies used to aid recovery from a coronavirus infection are present.
As a special thank-you, those who donate by April 30th will be automatically entered into a drawing for one of five $1,000 e-gift cards to a merchant of choice.
Schedule a donation appointment by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS(1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.
