It could be a statistical “bump” or it could be a sign of an increasingly common trend, and only time will tell. But a significant increase in COVID-19 activity is noted today by both the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health, and the State Department of Health Services.
After increasing 20 on Wednesday, The County DPH reports Thursday’s return of test results for COVID-19 yielded 31 new cases. That’s 26.5% of all returns, and it pushes the running case total here to 13,387. With 9 recoveries, the active case count rose 22 to 198, the highest since 218 active cases were recorded on February 12th. One more hospitalization puts the county’s COVID patient population at 6, and deaths remain unchanged at 134.
The State of Wisconsin as a whole saw a significant uptick in cases on Thursday as well, with 1,046 positives received from a total of 5,846 tests, yielding a positive percentage of 17.9%. The last time Wisconsin saw a similar increase in numbers was on February 9th, when 1,084 positive tests were reported – however that was out of 40,650 tests for a positive percentage of just 2.6%. 14 deaths since Wednesday were attributed to COVID-19, putting the toll at 6,667. 77 more hospitalizations due to the coronavirus were recorded since Wednesday, and after accounting for deaths and discharges the patient population grew by 18 to 286. 80 of those are in ICU beds, and 369 ventilators are in use. Some of those may be helping some of the 26 patients who are awaiting their test returns.
35% of Wisconsin residents – 2,038,670 – have now received at least one dose of vaccine, and 21.9%, or 1,276,478, are fully vaccinated against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
In Sheboygan County, 34.7% of the population, amounting to 39,987, have received at least one dose. An even 20% are fully vaccinated, and that’s 23,035 persons in all.
