A project to construct a new raw water intake for the Sheboygan Water Treatment Facility has reached the key 60% design point. The utility which currently provides an average of over 15 million gallons a day to Sheboygan, Sheboygan Falls and Kohler has two intakes, one of which is over a century old and has to be replaced. Also, the motors that pump the water from the lake are below the high water level and no longer conform to Wisconsin DNR standards.
During last week’s meeting of the Board of Water Commissioners an update was provided by Superintendent Joe Trueblood, who said that the 60% design drawings have now been submitted to the Wisconsin Public Service Commission for what’s expected to be a 9-month long review process. Commissioners were told that the project may require hiring a consultant to redesign the Vollrath Park Frisbee Golf Course due to displacement of one hole along the lakefront, and an application is also being considered for a federal FEMA BRIC grant, though it’s not certain at this point that the project would qualify. The total cost of the project is now estimated at about $35 million.
