CHARLOTTE, NC (WHBL) – Graham Mertz threw for 130 yards and a touchdown and had two scores on the ground as the Wisconsin Badgers cruised past Wake Forest 42-28 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte on Wednesday.
After giving up two early touchdowns, the Wisconsin defense intercepted Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman four times. Noah Burks, Scott Nelson, Collin Wilder and Jack Sanborn had the picks. Sanborn also had 11 tackles and was named MVP of the game.
Offensively, Graham Mertz threw a touchdown pass to Mason Stokke and added two scores on quarterback sneaks. Jalen Berger, Garrett Groshek and John Chenal added rushing TDs for the Badgers.
Wake Forest outgained the Badgers 518-266 on offense but Wisconsin had 176 return yards from those interceptions.
42 points is the highest total ever for the Badgers in a bowl game. The Badgers finish the season at 4-3.
Meanwhile, Badgers quarterback Graham Mertz accidentally dropped the Duke’s Mayo Bowl Trophy while celebrating the team win. Head coach Paul Chryst made light of the situation, joking that the team should all have a piece of the trophy.
