A national trend toward less alcohol consumption may be reaching Wisconsin.
University of New Mexico psychology professor Katie Witkiewitz says younger adults are leading the shift. Witkiewitz told interviewers that: “We’re seeing the trends to some extent across the board, but definitely more pronounced with younger adults. And what’s interesting is the younger adult age group is the group that tends to have the highest rates of drinking and the highest rates of problems related to alcohol. So the fact that we’re seeing reductions in that group is especially exciting”
Witkiewitz says alcohol-related problems often begin during young adulthood. Wisconsin has the highest per-capita rate of alcohol-related deaths compared to neighboring states, and one of the nation’s highest rates of adult binge drinking.
