Fond du Lac County authorities believe that carbon monoxide was behind a potentially deadly situation that developed in a rural home early this Tuesday morning. The Sheriff said that they were called to a home on County Road B just north of Long Lake in the Township of Osceola shortly after 2 AM, where multiple people were experiencing symptoms consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning.
The Eden Fire Department, Campbellsport Ambulance and a deputy with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office responded and found the family experiencing severe symptoms. That brought in addition resources from Fond du Lac Fire & Rescue and Mount Calvary Ambulance to assist in the transport of patients to local hospitals. In all, seven children ages 4, 7, 9, 2, 14, 16 and 17, along with a 46-year-old man and 42-year-old woman were affected.
Officials say that all individuals have been treated and released from the hospital. A preliminary investigation puts the blame on a boiler unit inside the home that was malfunctioning. The homeowner had been attempting repairs, resulting in carbon monoxide exhausting into the home.
While the investigation continues, the Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to check their smoke and CO2 detectors to ensure they’re working as we enter the colder months of the year.
