Those who are behind payments on their utility bills may get an unpleasant reminder as the moratorium on utility shutoffs comes to an end. The State of Wisconsin prevents electric and natural gas utilities from disconnecting residential heating services for nonpayment from November 1 through April 15th. On that day utilities are allowed to disconnect services for outstanding balances.
The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin is encouraging those customers to make payment arrangements with their provider before they’re cut off. Those who can’t reach an agreement should contact the Wisconsin Public Service Commission, and consider applying for financial assistance through the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program.
The two largest utilities serving the Sheboygan County area are:
We Energies 1-800-842-4565
Wisconsin Public Service Corporation 1-800-450-7260
If customers cannot reach an agreement with their utility, they may contact the PSC by calling
608-266-2001 or 1-800-225-7729, or by submitting a PSC complaint online.
Financial assistance is available to eligible households through the Wisconsin Home Energy
Assistance Program (WHEAP). WHEAP is part of the state’s comprehensive Home Energy Plus
program, which provides assistance for low-income households with emergency energy needs,
emergency furnace repairs, conservation service, and weatherization. Customers can contact the
Statewide Customer Care Center at 1-800-506-5596 or visit DEHCR Energy Assistance for more information about this program.
