Former Sheboygan County Administrator Adam Payne has been inducted into the Sheboygan County Conservation Hall of Fame. The award is given to an individual who has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to conservation on a local level, as well as contributing to the State and National Levels. The award was announced by the Sheboygan County Conservation Association, noting Payne’s work with landowners; local, state and federal officials, legislators, boards and committees to garner more support for protecting and enhancing our natural resources.
Payne served as the Sheboygan County Administrator from 1999-2022, during which he established a County Stewardship Program, a Water Quality Buffer Program, and the County acquisition of land at Gerber Lake and the Sheboygan County Broughton Marsh. Among numerous other contributions, Payne was instrumental in leveraging over $100 million to clean up and dredge the Sheboygan River and Harbor, and helped lead the charge to purchase the Amsterdam Dunes Preservation Area and establish a Wetland Mitigation Bank.
Payne most recently served as the Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources until his retirement in 2023. He and his wife, Kris, now operate a Christmas Tree Farm on their Town of Plymouth property.
