After serving his fourth term as Winnebago County Sheriff, John Matz has announced that he will not seek a fifth run for the office. Matz has been with the department for 36 years, and has called it “one of the greatest honors of my life”.
Matz said in his announcement on Friday that the decision comes after thoughtful reflection on both the needs of the office and the next chapter of his personal and professional life. He continued that “I remain fully committed to fulfilling my duties throughout the remainder of my term and ensuring a smooth transition for the next elected Sheriff.”
As for his replacement, Sheriff Matz is giving his full endorsement to current Office Captain Darin Rice, calling him a “proven and dedicated leader of the agency and will advance the agency in many ways.”
