A recent operation in Fond du Lac County to assess tavern and vendor adherence with underage drinking laws has revealed that 13 of the 42 businesses checked failed to comply. The countywide checks were conducted over the past three months and were completed on March 14th. They followed a series of educational sessions that were presented to vendors in November of last year, along with print and radio notices, training retailers and notifying them of the upcoming checks.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office partnered with Fond du Lac County United Way Drug Free Communities to complete the materials and conduct the checks using adults under the age of 21 who attempted to purchase alcohol at licensed establishments. Those individuals were accompanied by a legal-age witness to ensure the validity of each check. The underage individuals were instructed to answer age queries honestly, present identification clearly marked as under 21 when asked, and male participants had shaved their facial hair so as to not appear deceptive.
Of the 42 businesses checked, 10 failed to check ID’s and three others checked, but still sold alcohol to the underage individuals.
The Sheriff said that they remain committed to keep youth safe from the risks of underage consumption with the ultimate goal of eliminating preventable injuries and death.
