Despite the dangers presented, the recent winter storm has helped to eliminate drought conditions from Sheboygan County.
According to the National Integrated Drought Information System, the northern third of the county that had been in drought since November has improved to “Abnormally Dry” while the remainder of the county is now showing normal soil moisture. The current situation is now forecast to remain largely unchanged into June.
With Spring officially here as of this morning (9:46 AM) what may be of more immediate concern is runoff from snow melt swelling local rivers and streams. The National Water Prediction Service’s Sheboygan River Gauge at Esslingen Park was measuring the level at just over 3 feet this morning, and is expected to crest just shy of 5 feet on Sunday before declining. With the “Action” stage set at 6 feet, flooding appears unlikely at this point.
