High winds on Friday tore off a portion of the roof and displaced bricks from the Reiss building in Sheboygan. The structure, now occupied by Habush Habush & Rottier, was hit by winds likely near 60 MPH shortly after 1 PM Friday, detaching a portion of the roof and knocking bricks off the structure. Winds had gusted to 60 MPH as early as 2 AM as measured at the North Breakwall Lighthouse, and peaked at a NWS Observer location at 63 MPH shortly after 3 PM.
Responding firefighters called in the Sheboygan Police Department to secure the area, blocking off pedestrian and vehicle traffic around the building and closing the roundabout at 8th and Indiana Avenue. Firefighters entered the building, ensuring that anyone on the damaged west side of the building was safely evacuated, while contractors, building inspectors and SFD personnel went to the rooftop to assess the extent of the damages. Finding no structural concerns, and reporting no injuries, operations focused on routing traffic through the area and the South Pier District.
During Friday’s windstorm, tens of thousands lost power in southeastern Wisconsin, and tree and structure damage was widespread. Winds will again be strong during a storm impacting the area tonight through Monday, but aren’t forecast to reach such extreme levels as on Friday.
