Plymouth Police say their department has investigated several instances of sextortion over the past several months.
Officials say the incidents start with victims accepting friend requests on social media sites and begin engaging in conversation, which eventually turns sexual in nature. The offender convinces the victim to provide compromising photos or videos of themselves, which are then used by the offender as extortion material in exchange for money.
Police remind you to refrain from accepting friend requests from those you do not know, do not send explicit photos or videos to anyone—especially those you haven’t met in person, do not pay if someone attempts to extort money from you, cease all contact, and take screenshots of the conversations and contact police immediately if you find yourself a victim of these crimes.
As of this past December when “Bradyn’s Law” went into effect, sextortion is a standalone felony in Wisconsin.
