Wisconsin State Senator Devin Lemahieu
State Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu of Oostburg still hopes a portion of the state surplus can go back to taxpayers in the form of rebate checks. Wisconsin is forecast to have a surplus as large as $2.5 billion by the end of the current budget cycle, and the governor and legislature have tussled over how to manage that surplus for years.
LeMahieu was hopeful, but realistic when commenting about the proposal, saying: “So $1000 rebate check to joint filers and a $500 rebate check to individual filers. Unfortunately, the governor came out at the end of last week and called rebate checks a gimmick in spite of the fact that he proposed rebate checks in 2022 when he was running for reelection.”
Time isn’t in favor of passage, though, as the last general-business floor period is only three weeks away.
