Reconstruction of the 10.4 miles of I-43 between Wilson/Lima Road in the Town of Wilson to Wisconsin 42 in the Town of Sheboygan is about to dominate area roadwork for at least the next eight months beginning one week from today (Monday).
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has announced that the $21 million contract to rehabilitate that stretch of highway was recently signed by Governor Evers, and will affect traffic with reduced lanes in both directions, as well as numerous ramp closures.
The project summary includes “removing 3 inches of the deteriorated pavement surface and overlaying with 3-3/4” of new asphalt pavement. Structure maintenance will take place on nine bridges in the project work zone, sign structure replacement, slope grading, restoration, beamguard replacement, shouldering, and pavement markings.”
The operations are expected to be proactive, significantly extend the service life of the pavement and associated structures for many additional years. The DOT expects the project to wrap up in late October or early November this year.
The schedule, construction staging, closures from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is as follows:
- March 2, 2026, to mid-March: Tree clearing and ROW fencing with minimal traffic impacts.
- Mid-March to July 2026: Long term lane closures on I-43
- July 2026 to November 2026: Intermittent lane closures during non-peak travel times.
- July 2026 to August 2026: Southbound I-43 collector/distributor ramp and associated loop ramp at WIS 23.
- July 2026 to August 2026: Northbound I-43 collector/distributor ramp and associated loop ramps at WIS 23.
- July 2026 to September 2026: Long term lane closures on County PP over I-43
- March 2026 to November 2026: I-43 ramps at County V, WIS 28, and WIS 42 (2-day closure each)
