The City of Sheboygan is initiating the process to take ownership and stewardship of the North Breakwall Lighthouse.
The Public Works Committee, meeting on Monday at 5 PM, will take up a resolution by Alders Dekker and Rust to authorize the City to apply to purchase the Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse. The resolution states that: “…the City of Sheboygan needs and will use said property in perpetuity…”, and would commit to spending nearly a half million ($495,857) dollars to properly refurbish the facility. Funds would be obtained through grants and internal funding, and incorporated into the capital operation plan through the Facilities Department.
Although not presently coordinated, there is also a concurrent initiative underway by the Army Corps of Engineers to maintain and repair the north breakwall, which is vulnerable to high impact from wave action. No mention was made connecting the two projects, but the application being made to the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act Program stipulates that reports accounting for preservation of the lighthouse must begin no later than 2 year from the date of conveyance.
