Winter is proving to be a traffic challenge for most of us right now, but when it comes to keeping commercial water routes open, the US Coast Guard says that they’re up to that challenge as they’ve deployed the Ice Cutter “Mobile Bay” to keep traffic flowing on Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay.
The Coast Guard said that both bodies of water are in need of the operation, and the public…especially ice fishers…are being advised to keep a lookout and exercise extreme caution near areas where those operations are active. They say that ice can be weakened far beyond an icebreaker’s immediate path, creating unpredictable conditions and inconsistent thickness.
Their best advice is to maintain a safe distance from icebreaking vessels and avoid areas that were recently broken.
