The first arctic blast of the season has revealed the level of demand for shelter by Sheboygan’s homeless population.
The Sheboygan County Warming Center sent out an urgent call for help on Saturday when it adjusted hours to accommodate the numbers needing help staying warm, remaining open until the Mead Public Library opened, and reopening when the Library closed. With the library closed on Sunday, the Shelter remained open around the clock, and did come up with enough volunteers to cover those hours in 2-hour shifts.
The Shelter said that it provided breakfasts and lunch for about 60 people while they stayed safe from the cold. While it’s understood that not everyone can volunteer their time, operators said donations are always welcome as it costs about $50 per hour to stay open. Donations can be made through the Warming Center’s website.
