In the midst of an early storm of wind and snow, a tangle of vehicles in Ozaukee County sent many to hospitals, and resulted in the death of another.
The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a “multiple vehicle crash” at 3:11 PM on Wednesday. Responders rushed to the site on I-43 at the Highway 33 interchange to find a jackknifed semi and three passenger vehicles involved in a collision that resulted when the southbound semi driver lost control and travelled into the I-43 northbound lanes. There it was struck by two northbound vehicles, a Mercedes Benz van and a Ford Fusion, both of which became pinned underneath the semi upon striking it. The as-yet-unidentified driver of the Mercedes suffered fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. The Ford Fusion driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Aurora Medical Center Hospital in Grafton.
Joining that driver at Aurora were the three occupants of a third vehicle that struck the semi; a northbound Subaru Forester that came to rest near the Highway 33 exit ramp after impact. All three were taken to Aurora-Grafton with severe, but non-life-threatening injuries.
I-43 northbound lanes were closed for about 5-1/2 hours, but were reopened shortly after 8:30 PM.
