Whitetail Deer
The figures for the first weekend of Wisconsin’s 2025 9-day Gun Deer Season have been released by the Wisconsin DNR, showing license applications consistent with the past year, and an increase in the harvest from 2024.
In total, hunters registered 90,671 deer statewide during the opening weekend of the hunt. That compares with 87,248 registered for the same period last year. Data shows an increase of 3.9% in registrations from a year ago, but that’s still 1.1% below the 5-year average.
So far this season, 1,838 deer have been harvested in Sheboygan County; 1,056 antlered and 782 antlerless. The Sheboygan Metro Subunit recorded a harvest of 135 antlered and 67 antlerless deer in the first weekend of the hunt.
Two incidents marred the opening weekend in Wisconsin. On Saturday, November 22nd, a 57-year-old man suffered an accidental wound to the buttocks in North Lancaster Township. An investigation is pending.
Also on Saturday, 24-year-old Michael Kottke of Lomira was discovered deceased from an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound beneath his tree stand near the Horicon Marsh. Preliminary investigation suggests that Kottke was bearing his firearm while ascending to his tree stand. The DNR recommends raising and lowering the firearm via a sling rather than attempting to transport while climbing.
