The impacts of the federal shutdown are about to come down on another segment of Sheboygan County in about two weeks.
Governor Tony Evers announced on Thursday that the Sheboygan Human Rights Association plans to close its Head Start classrooms on November 14, leaving 172 children in Sheboygan County without programming, and 49 staff without paychecks. The shutdown comes amid expiration of grant funding and the lack of the issuance of a new grant to continue service. Also affected is the Southwestern Wisconsin Community Action Program which will close nine Head Start classrooms on November 3, affecting 114 children and 34 staff in Iowa, Lafayette, Grant, Green and Richland counties.
Evers called the shutdown “reckless” and said that “Republicans in Congress must step up and start putting America’s and Wisconsin’s kids and families first.” The loss of funding comes on Day 30 of the federal government shutdown as Democrats and Republicans in Washington hold each other accountable for the impasse.
Local families that are impacted by Head Start closures are encouraged to contact Child Care Resource & Referral, Inc., which serves Sheboygan and surrounding counties for personalized assistance in finding temporary child care that meets their needs, and also to apply for the Wisconsin Share child care subsidy program to receive assistance in paying for child care.
