Although black bear sightings are rare in our neighborhood, they do show up from time to time. However, numbers released today by the Wisconsin DNR suggest that the rarity was maintained this year.
Sheboygan and surrounding counties are in Bear Zone “F”, which logged a total of 27 bears harvested out of 500 licenses issued – a 5% success rate. The zone, which reaches the Illinois state line, extends northward into Shawano, Oconto, Kewaunee and Door Counties. Sheboygan County data, if any, was not detailed.
In all, 3,724 Black Bear were taken in the fall hunting season, close to the five-year average, most of those in far northern Wisconsin.
