Not all energy needs are met by mega-size generating stations tying up acreage that’s highly valued for other purposes. One such quiet, nearly unnoticed installation is the Alliant Energy Natural Gas Generating Station situated just off Highway 23 north of Sheboygan Falls, and this modest electric plant is now growing.
US Census figures show that the city of Sheboygan Falls population grew from 6,764 in 2000 to 8,210 in 2020, a growth of over 20% (21.3%), and with increasing numbers of people – potentially gobbling even more energy for homes, computers and such things as electric vehicles, electric capacity has to grow. That’s why Alliant Energy is upgrading its gas generating station from the current 300 megawatt capacity to 440 megawatts – enough to power nearly 30% more homes according to Alliant’s website.
Alliant says that its gas turbines are more efficient and can quickly adjust its output up or down, something that’s not so easy with other methods of power generation. It also works whether or not the wind blows or the sun shines.
Construction is underway now, and by the summer of next year, there should be plenty more power available to keep homes running and for EV’s to be charged & ready to roll.
