An increasing number of scams that impersonate the agency has prompted the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles to launch a webpage that warns people about the schemes.
The DMV says that scammers are increasingly texting and emailing consumers, posing as Wisconsin DMV and demanding payment or personal information. As is the case without exception, legitimate agencies will never text or email with a demand to pay for services. But the DMV says that’s exactly what is being communicated…a demand for money or personal information, almost always presenting a sense of urgency to settle the issue.
Recent scams have included so-called “Final Notice” messages warning of imminent fines or suspension; an EZ-Pass notice of an unpaid balance, or of unpaid traffic tickets in violation of an administrative code which doesn’t even exist, even though it looks entirely official.
It’s gotten so frequent that the agency has set up an eNotify system that will alert drivers to transactions on their DMV account, which will help identify any fraudulent activities such as charges or duplicate applications.
You can sign up for that and find out more here.
