Highway 23 had to be shut down for nearly five hours on Thursday following several multi-vehicle accidents.
A 79-year old Sheboygan woman attempting to cross over the highway at Sunset Road in heavy fog initiated the first accident involving at least nine vehicles. She collided with an eastbound vehicle driven by a 19-year-old Sheboygan man, and with both vehicles blocking the road a chain reaction accident involving 5 additional vehicles resulted. a 22-year-old Plymouth man was taken to Froedtert in Milwaukee with serious life-threatening injuries. A 37-year-old Glenbeulah woman with serious injuries and her two juvenile passengers were taken to Aurora in Sheboygan for treatment. The 79-year-old woman causing the accident will be cited for failure to yield right of way causing injury.
Shortly after that accident a separate 2-vehicle crash without injuries happened just to the west of the first one.
Another 8-vehicle accident then occurred on 23 east at Bridgewood Road, sending two persons with minor injuries to St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan.
Fog was a factor in all the incidents.
