With barely a breather between Brat Day & Coho Derby weekend, Sheboygan is already deep in the heat of preparations for hosting the 3rd annual P1 Powerboat Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge this weekend, August 8-10.
A return of the highest caliber of US powerboat racing will, for the first time, be joined by AquaX Jet Ski racing. Competition takes place offshore of Sheboygan, while the city itself will be bursting with related activities.
Everything starts with the Downtown Block Party at 6 PM on Friday, with powerboats, watercraft, a variety of food and drink options, along with live music punctuating the scene at City Green.
Meanwhile, the Deland Park Pit Space is where the race teams will spend their time fine-tuning their crafts while those same teams meet with fans as time permits.
South Pier will be the headquarters on Saturday and Sunday when over 50 race teams, including Class-1 teams reaching speeds up to 160 MPH, compete in the Monster Energy P1 Offshore Triple Crown and P1 AquaX National Championship races. The race course will stretch from the marina southward to King Park and Lakeshore drive on a six-mile course.
The City of Sheboygan is reminding residents that alcohol possession and consumption is prohibited on any beach area in the city, with the exception of the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) district delineated on South Pier and at King Park. The City said it is committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone, and will have extra police presence and waste collection emplaced to ensure the best experience.
To reduce parking and traffic congestion, special shuttle and event trolly service will be provided both Saturday and Sunday, free and open to all, between 9AM and 7PM Saturday, and from 9-6 on Sunday.
