The favorite son of the Hub City in Sheboygan County intends to step down from public life. Governor Tony Evers, who describes his childhood in Sheboygan County as “…a scrawny kid with glasses who grew up scraping mold off cheese…” announced on Thursday that he would not seek a third term as Governor of Wisconsin.
Evers, who was born in 1951 in Plymouth, attended Plymouth High School and earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in the field of education from UW-Madison. A lifelong educator, he was elected as State Superintendent of Public Schools in 2009, and won his first term as Governor 10 years later, an office he has held ever since.
In his official statement, Evers said that it was the “honor of his life” to be able to give back to the state that raised him. He said that he worked every day to keep his campaign promise of always working to do the right thing, and that he was “…damn proud I’ve devoted my career and most of my life to working for you, Wisconsin.”
Evers stated that it was time for him to focus on being a husband, a dad, and a grandpa, and to focus on things he enjoys and loves doing with his family. His announcement clears the way for Democrat hopefuls to win the state’s top office in the face of a Republican majority in both the Senate and Assembly.
