Wisconsin waters are popular points of recreation during a July 4th holiday weekend, and with forecasts for plenty of sun and warm weather, those waters can get crowded. It’s also one of the busiest weekends for DNR wardens, the Sheboygan County Marine Unit of the Sheriff’s Office, and the US Coast Guard who will be out in numbers looking for impaired boaters.
Boating under the influence is illegal in Wisconsin, and impairment from alcohol or drugs significantly increases the risk of incidents, injuries and fatalities.
According to the US Coast Guard the number-one cause of accidents is a collision with a recreational vessel, and the number-one vessel for casualties is an open motorboat. And while alcohol was 7th among the top-10 factors contributing to those accidents, it still accounted for 79 deaths and 201 injuries in 2023 according to US Coast Guard statistics. And by the month, July is tops for overall deaths on the water.
Operation Dry Water promotes a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol on the water, meaning they encourage everyone on the boat – not just the operator – to remain sober, as impairment is also a risk for the passengers. To be safe, the DNR and its Operation Dry Water partners are encouraging everyone to boat sober and to know your limits. Always wear a properly fitted and fastened life jacket when you’re on or near the water. Keep an eye on the weather and always tell someone where you’re going.

Keeping safe boating top-of-mind, and with a clear mind at that, can help ensure this 4th of July weekend is a great time for everyone.
