A vehicle driving south in the northbound lanes of I-43 early Monday morning caused a head-on collision, taking the lives of two Oostburg residents and seriously injuring a third.
The rear-seat passenger in the northbound SUV was a 22-year-old Oostburg woman who had to be extricated from the wreckage, and is being treated at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee where she is in serious condition. The 51-year-old woman driving the Ford Escape SUV from Oostburg, and her front-seat passenger, a 56-year-old Oostburg man, were both pronounced deceased at the scene.
The offending driver, a 34-year-old Milwaukee Man, was the sole occupant of his Lexus and was transported by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee in critical condition.
Ozaukee County Sheriff Christy Knowles said that at around 12:37 a.m. Sunday, they’d received several 911 calls of a wrong-way driver in the northbound lanes of I-43 near Jay Road in the Town of Belgium. The head-on collision happened at 12:44 a.m. north of Ozaukee County Road H in the Town of Port Washington. The crash caused a 5-hour closure of the interstate at County Highway H while investigators parsed the scene. Whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved wasn’t yet known, and the incident remains under investigation. The names of the deceased were not immediately released.
