Dry vegetation, low humidity and very high winds are combining to present an elevated fire danger and subsequent warnings from the Wisconsin DNR. Although only two small wildfires were active on Monday, one each in Clark and Portage Counties, the potential for far more extensive fires exists to the extent that burn permits have been suspended in 24 counties, Sheboygan and surrounding counties not included.
In anticipation of the need to quickly respond to any outbreaks, DNR staff will be available and all state-owned equipment at the ready in the event a large fire ignites. The Wisconsin National Guard has also been put on standby with two crews available to respond with bucket-equipped Blackhawk helicopters.
Spring presents the most fire danger in Wisconsin as even a few days between precipitation can leave grasses, pine needles and leaf litter in prime condition to catch fire. The DNR is urging people to check their fire danger webpage before any burning is planned, and to obtain the proper permits where required.
