The acronym is SOUP, the event is a soup dinner fundraiser, and the goal is to contribute to a better Sheboygan. SOUP stands for Support Our Urban Projects, and is the idea of the nonprofit group, Active 8 Sheboygan, whose goal it is to gather ideas about improving the city from citizens and to put some of those into action. Among the projects the organization has helped to bring to fruition so far are the Levitt AMP Summer Concert Series, the E-tude concerts at Paradigm and the Weill Center, and the Coastal Young Professionals Network. And although not a part of City government, the City of Sheboygan helps support and promote Active 8 Sheboygan through events such as the upcoming SOUP dinner being held on Thursday, May 8th at 3 Sheeps Brewing Company.
During the event, up to five community members will present short pitches on projects they believe will benefit Sheboygan. A $5 door charge includes a delicious soup dinner and a vote. The project receiving the most votes gets 100% of the proceeds in order to put the gears in motion.
Active 8 Sheboygan’s Board President, Dana Elmzen, said that their group is about elevating local voices and supporting the creativity within our own neighborhoods, and is hoping that hundreds will turn out on May 8th to be part of building a better Sheboygan – one bowl of soup at a time.
